Prostate Gland Enlargement

Contrary to many people may think, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) otherwise know as enlarged prostate is not a disease brought upon by mal nutrition or inappropriate sexual activities. It is simply a condition caused largely due to aging. As men age, the prostate gland gets bigger or becomes enlarged causing problems with urination. In addition, it’s also important to note that even though the condition may mostly affect older men, younger men are not immune to it.

The size of the prostate gland gradually increases as men age. Generally the prostate gland grows in size from childhood, but tends to become bothersome as it continues past the age of 40. Unfortunately for many men, it gland get so large that it starts to exert pressure on the Urethra (urine tube) making it difficult and in many cases painful to urinate.

Following is a list of some of the common symptoms associated with enlarged prostate gland. Although these factors alone will not diagnose if your have bigger than normal prostate gland, but they are pretty good indication that a problem exist. The symptoms include:

• Difficulty controlling urine both in getting started and stopping
• Pain while urinating forcefully
• Feeling the need or want to urinate frequently in the middle of the night or urinating short while after urinating initially.
• Burning sensation in the penis along the entire penis shaft


While enlarged prostate is not consider a life threatening condition it can lead to some serious health conditions such as infection in the bladder and kidney failure; especially if the urine remains in the system for a long duration of time. In some cases, you will notice visible signs of blood or puss in the urine. Should this happen, you need to seek immediate medical attention, DO NOT DELAY.

Treatment for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

The best person to diagnose your condition and offer you the best prostate treatment is of course a medical professional you like and trust; your family doctor for instance. He will be able to determine if the condition is severe enough that it requires surgery or prescription oral medications will do.
